Located in the heart of downtown Oakland, on only one-third of an acre, this building includes 20 units for families, 6 units for singles, a childcare program and adult counseling. Five of the families have direct entry into the courtyard from their townhomes and the remainder is in flats, never more than two flights from the play area. Only singles use the elevator to the top (fourth) floor. While all families have their own balconies or patios, the singles have a shared roof deck to encourage socializing. Art works representing the different ethnic groups in Oakland are incorporated into the building. Tile designs inspired by West African house painting grace the front entry arch and act as a cornice on the top floor. Symbols for community and prosperity are incorporated in their patterns.
