Intended as replacement housing for very low-income singles, this apartment building is located on a steeply sloping infill site near downtown Seattle, bounded by an alley at the rear and a mixed-use street in the front. Consequently, Pyatok Architects designed it with ground floor retail on the main street, and double-height live-work artists' lofts entered from the alley. The remainder of the building includes one-room studios, approximately 230 s.f. in area, each with a bath and kitchen. The architects took advantage of an adjacent L-shaped, residential building owned by the same client. The new building uses an intervening court redesigned as open space to serve both buildings.
