The Kukui’Ula project is the “workforce housing” portion of an expanding resort and condominium development in southern Kauai and includes 75 homes configured in 43 single family detached homes and 32 duplexes in 2, 3 and 4-bedroom units. Pyatok Architects was selected to lead a series of participatory design workshop with the community to develop dwelling prototypes for resort workers and their families. The for-sale units will be offered at prices affordable to a family at 60-130% of the area median income. The design workshops produced several typical plans that reflect the local culture and lifestyle, incorporating outdoor spaces that serve as an extension of the interior space, open floor plans and guest units made of materials and design elements that echo the vernacular building typology.
