Marcus Garvey Commons
Oakland, California

Surrounded by 'low-Victorian' homes from the early 20th Century, the development playfully captures the rhythm and character of the neighborhood without mimicry. The central community building also serves the adjoining neighborhood and opens to a rear common play area. Its roof cupola is designed to be topped by a sculpture representing Marcus Garvey. The elevated BART tracks, carrying trains from San Francisco, pass by the rear of the development overlooking rear patios. Rear patios are designed like 'outdoor rooms' with fencing and overhead beams to tidily package belongings stored there within the view of BART passengers. Each family has its own townhome with a front door facing the street and private rear patio. A large eat-in kitchen, facing the rear patio with afternoon sun is entered through the rear door when arriving from the parking area. A formal living room faces the street with a front door for guests.
