San Diego Transit-Related Affordable Housing Competition
San Diego, California
Pyatok Associates won First Place in the international design competition sponsored by the City of San Diego in 1992. The proposal for high density housing, retail and community facilities related to a transit station was noted by the jury for being the most innovative as well as the most respectful of neighborhood concerns. Pyatok Associates approached this design with a strong philosophy of linking the existing neighborhood fabric with the new development, and creating an urban mixed-use living and shopping environment where the automobile is as unobtrusive as possible. As part of this strategy, Pyatok Associates condensed the housing and commercial uses into tight footprints to release large amounts of open space for neighborhood parks and community uses. (This scheme produces a 1.25 acre park with community swimming pool; 5,000 s.f. child care center; 2,850 s.f. recreation building; 1,650 s.f. community center).
