PYATOK is proud to announce the promotion of two of our firm leaders to principals, Theresa Ballard, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, and Kevin Markarian, AIA, NCARB. Theresa and Kevin have made indelible contributions to PYATOK’s culture and growth, not to mention the built environment, and the fruition of client and community visions and ambitions. Both were previously Associate Principals at the firm.

Theresa has, over her 20 years’ experience, consistently balanced technical knowledge with creative solutions to cultivate community among distinct resident groups. She has worked with unique communities ranging from students and assisted-living seniors to homeowners and the formerly unhoused. Through proactive collaboration with clients, consultants, and project teams, she has developed keen discernment of the particular needs and priorities of each community she works with. Theresa is currently leading the design of Caritas Village mixed-use navigation center and permanent supportive housing in Santa Rosa and overseeing the completion of the Alta Madrone affordable community in Sonoma. Previously Theresa managed the renovation of the historic Bowles Hall for UC Berkeley and construction of multiple Lion Creek Crossings Phases at Coliseum Station in Oakland. In the community at large, Theresa is a committed advocate of affordable and supportive housing as the best solution to homelessness. She has served 12 years on the board of directors for Abode Services, a local nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness, and she is a former Planning Commissioner in Newark, CA.

Kevin’s work consistently responds to broad urban contexts and the many social challenges related to housing and increasing density in cities. The Bay Area’s dense, transit-oriented communities drew him to study and practice architecture here. Kevin’s specialization in large-scale multifamily projects and BIM integration have consistently led to strong collaborations and successful projects for many communities, whether affordable, senior, or market-rate. Kevin has brought to completion projects ranging from market-rate Jones Berkeley in Berkeley to Paradise Creek affordable family housing in National City. He is currently overseeing the construction of Alameda Point Block 9 and design of several other market-rate projects throughout the Bay Area. Kevin is a member of East Bay Housing Organizations and currently serves on the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition Project Review Committee.

Theresa and Kevin join Peter Waller, Curtis Caton, Adrianne Steichen, and Marcial Chao as senior firm leadership and in continuing the legacy of founder Mike Pyatok. We couldn’t be more thrilled!
