Two PYATOK-design affordable housing projects were commemorated last month:

On June 14th, San Jose mayor Matt Mahan and other city and county officials joined project partners for the ribboncutting of Mesa Terrace, bringing 49 homes for low-income families, seniors, and transition-aged youth exiting the foster system to the walkable Almaden neighborhood. The project, which includes podium-level resident amenities and terrace and a publicly-accessible community room on the ground floor, was made possible in part by Santa Clara County’s Measure A affordable housing bond. PYATOK designed a five-story project that orchestrates the project’s programming, incorporates robust efficient and renewable energy systems, and celebrates its unique corner site while respecting neighboring residences.

On June 29th, project partners joined residents and Richmond mayor Eduardo Martinez for a dedication of the newly-renovated Hacienda Heights Senior Apartments. The project revived and expanded a six-story, 150-unit, concrete midcentury midrise, vacant since 2014, for seniors aged 62+. The development team was motivated to secure senior housing in anticipation of the “silver tsunami” of retiring baby boomers, including frail seniors and seniors exiting homelessness. Community gathering spaces will host programs from wellness and skill-building to intergenerational and nurse visiting. Nearly an acre of landscaped gardens and courtyards, private seating nooks, walkways, and a community garden (designed by PGAdesign) encourage active lifestyles. PYATOK led the synthesis of revitalized indoor and outdoor spaces, seismic reinforcement (designed by Tipping), building systems modernization, and prominent public artwork, to restore Hacienda Heights as a beacon of city livability.
