LATEST NEWS A Long-Awaited Groundbreaking at East 12th April 26, 2024

On Tuesday, April 23, dozens of stakeholders gathered at an empty lot at 12th St and 2nd Ave overlooking Lake Merritt to commemorate the groundbreaking of a long-awaited affordable housing project. Developed by EBALDC, The Unity Council, and Jordan Real Estate Investments, 121 East 12th will create 91 homes for low-income Oaklanders, including 23 apartments and supportive services for families and individuals exiting homelessness.

The milestone carries outsized symbolism due to the long, and often fraught, timeline for developing housing on this City-owned site, dating back nearly a decade. The property was “created” by the 2013 realignment of 12th Street. Proposals followed for a market-rate tower, which evolved into a mixed-income development, both concepts experiencing grassroots pushback for not fully committing this public land to affordable housing. The City ultimately responded by splitting the lot into two affordable housing developments that will ultimately yield 185 homes.

121 East 12th was made possible in part by Measure U funding, an ambitious, city-wide infrastructure bond passed in 2022 that included $350M for affordable housing. The construction cost will be about $60M, with completion anticipated in Summer 2025. We look forward to entering construction on this critical contribution to Oakland’s goal of 10,000 new affordable homes by 2030.
