Camino 23 Satellite Affordable Housing Associates
Oakland, California Affordable Housing

Camino 23 is a publicly-funded, five-story residential development located at the corner of International Boulevard and 23rd Avenue in the lower San Antonio neighborhood of East Oakland. All of the units are permanently affordable for low-income households. The L-shaped site is nestled among existing buildings including single-story commercial buildings and Eastside Arts and Housing, a three-story mixed-use building owned and operated by the project sponsor, Satellite Affordable Housing Associates (SAHA), in partnership with Eastside Arts Alliance.

The project's ground floor includes of a community gallery, on-site management office, service office, common laundry room, service spaces, and residential and commercial parking. Six commercial parking spaces will serve Eastside Arts and Housing while the remaining 11 spaces will serve the residential building, split between eight uncovered and three covered spaces within the ground floor of the new structure. The upper four floors consist of residential flats with a roof deck and lounge on level five.

Vibrant colors and materials of the building's exterior celebrate the neighborhood’s rich commercial and industrial uses and history. The courtyard off 23rd Avenue is screened by a decorative enclosure of metal, wood, and glass integrated into the ground floor. Each unit incorporates fresh-air intakes with filters to mitigate the effects of the heavy truck traffic on Interstate 880 and East 12th Street, and window fins promote passive cooling. Additional sustainable features include courtyard permeable pavers, rooftop photovoltaics, and solar thermal panels.
