A new wellness campus near Alameda’s Crab Cove will include publicly-funded, 100% affordable, permanently-supportive homes for unhoused and formerly homeless seniors.
The two-story residential component includes studio apartments, indoor and outdoor amenities, as well as offices for housing placement and health and respite services. The project redevelops a 3.6-acre property adjoining a forthcoming respite center and medical clinic. This integrated model of care will orchestrate housing, clinic, and wrap-around services for medically-frail adults aged 55 years and older.
Previously a host to Merchant Marine barracks-turned-government offices, the site had been identified as federal surplus property and earmarked for homeless services. The reimagined site plan includes an enclosed resident courtyard, contemplative gardens and pathways, stormwater catchment zones, and a plaza and paseo shared with the clinic. The project takes design cues from the local vernacular and utilizes a palette of colors and materials inspired by Crab Cove. The ground floor will include offices, a dining room and meal staging area, and multipurpose rooms, as well as support spaces. Special accommodations for the senior residents include the provision of laundry rooms and lounges on both floors.
