3050 International will provide needed affordable housing for families along with a health and dental clinic focusing on youth/adolescent services and a Native American community/cultural center. Native American Health Center (NAHC) and SAHA are co-developing this five-story, mixed-use project. NAHC has been serving the community since 1972, and provides medical, dental, behavioral health, and social programs to sixteen sites and fifty-three Head Start programs across the Bay Area. NAHC currently owns three properties along International Boulevard. SAHA provides quality affordable homes and services and is currently developing two other projects on International.
Residential units above the ground-floor clinic will serve families with rents ranging from 20% - 60% AMI. The units will frame a podium-level outdoor space offering a mix of sunlit and shaded spaces, garden spots, and views onto International Boulevard. This refuge and respite of the urban streetscape forms the heart of this community. The project will bring light into stairways and hallways to provide a connection to nature, and manage water and renewable energy use. The L-shaped building has separate entries for each program – the more public clinic and cultural center will be accessed from International, while the residential lobby is sited on Derby Street.
PYATOK was asked to create a unique identity for the building that drew inspiration from Native American cultural traditions while also being universally appealing for the diverse Fruitvale residents anticipated to use the clinic. Interweaving colors and materials on the façade mimic the patterns of basket weaving. Art-infused canopies above the main entries echo the flicker feathers of traditional headdresses.
