Situated between the eastern waterfront and Potrero Hill, San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood has maintained the character of a working-class community, with 19th century worker cottages coexisting side by side with commercial and industrial uses. Avalon Dogpatch expands this unique enclave by replacing a 600-foot-long metal shed with a lively frontage of stoops, generous landscaping, and street-facing common areas. The new 53-foot-high building also provides the neighborhood with an improved acoustic buffer along the raised I-280 Freeway.
PYATOK and associate architects Mithun | Solomon and Kennerly Architecture & Planning worked closely with the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association to shape three visually distinct buildings and a rich palette of materials, reinforcing the eclectic character of the Dogpatch. The pedestrian frontage on Indiana Street is enhanced with a wide, landscaped sidewalk anchored by a 50-foot-wide mid-block plaza that serves as an informal community gathering place.
