LATEST NEWS - ARCHIVE PRINCIPAL EMERITUS MIKE PYATOK October 13, 2022

Thirty-eight years after launching his design practice, Michael Pyatok, FAIA, has transitioned to an independent role continuing his 50-plus-year commitment to promoting housing for all through design, teaching, and advocacy. As a Principal Emeritus, Mike will continue to inspire our day-to-day practice and will engage with PYATOK on community-based efforts.

“Mike has maintained a tireless commitment to building a mission-driven professional practice, setting the example for colleagues in terms of energy, passion, beautiful drawings, and a healthy dose of laughter,” says PYATOK Principal Peter Waller.

“We’re all grateful for the incredible opportunities that have grown out of Mike’s passion for community building and people building,” adds Principal Curtis Caton. “We already see his ambition and dedication shifting gears in his new endeavors – it’s the beginning of a new chapter.”

Mike’s new endeavors include working with cities to plan transitional villages for people experiencing homelessness, designing for nonprofits, and supporting projects led by the office. More information about Mike’s current work and long career can be found on his profile page.

Leadership of the firm is carried forward by Principals Peter Waller, Curtis Caton, Adrianne Steichen, Marcial Chao, Theresa Ballard, Kevin Markarian, and Associate Principal Kim Suczynski Smith. Each has extensive experiencein participatory design, urban design, and multifamily housing of all types. We look forward to continuing the housing legacy that Mike has dedicated his life to building.

Pyatok - Mike began his design career in Oakland working with local community groups to renovate, preserve, and build housing where it was most needed. In1984, he joined Housing Committee members of Oakland Community Organizations for a groundbreaking of the office's first project, a series of first-time buyers' houses in the Prescott neighborhood - the culmination of a collective effort combining design and activism.
